Popular Photography's 2005 Camera of the Year, the EOS 5D bridges the gap between Canon's consumer digital SLRs and larger professional models. Its feature set, design, and build are close to those of the lower-end 20D and 30D, while it takes after the 1Ds Mark II by offering a full-frame sensor (that is, it's the same size as a frame of 35mm film). Most importantly, the 5D offers the best image quality you can buy for under $3,500, and it performs very well even at high ISO settings. It isn't the best option for action photographers, since its drive mode maxes out at 3.5fps. However, its autofocus system is quick, accurate, and capable of focusing even at EV -0.5. A mid-size model, the 5D lacks a pop-up flash and built-in vertical grip, but it sports a gorgeous 2.5-inch LCD and is compatible with Canon's EX-series Speedlites and E-TTL II flash system. It takes Canon's EF lenses but isn't compatible with the digital-only EF-S optics. Compatible accessories include Canon's BG-E4 vertical grip, DVK-E2 data verification kit, and WFT-E1A wireless transmitter. The 5D doesn't capture TIFFs, but you can process its RAW images with the included Digital Photo Professional 2.1 software.
