Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro

Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro

Price (MSRP): $2,799.00
Megapixel: 12.3
TYPE: Digital SLR

The S3 Pro balances image quality, camera features, performance, and price. Its body is built by Nikon to Fujifilm specs and includes a stainless steel chassis with magnesium-alloy body panels for protection. A mix of other features, taken from both the Nikon N80 and the venerable F100, include a fast, selectable 5-zone AF system; 3D Matrix metering; and compatibility with a wide range of Nikon F-mount lenses, including the DX series. It also has a vertical shutter release, dual-media slots for CF and xD-Picture cards, a pop-up flash, and both FireWire and USB 2.0 connections. It's compatible with Nikon's D-TTL flash system, but not the newer i-TTL units. Fujifilm's unique 12.3MP Super CCD SR II sensor uses 6.17 million S pixels and 6.17 million smaller R pixels to achieve increased dynamic range, more accurate colors (especially skin tones), and low noise. We found the level of detail captured in the 12MP mode to be similar to that of a 7MP camera. If you're looking for a tougher or faster-shooting pro SLR, there are better choices, but wedding, portrait, and landscape photographers will find the image quality from the S3 Pro hard to beat.
