By upgrading to a 10-megapixel image sensor, the entry level Nikon D40 DSLR turned into the D40x and now competes with other cost-cutting 10-shooters such as the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi and the Sony Alpha 100. Instead of using the 10-megapixel sensor of the higher-end D80, the D40x uses a similar APS-C-sized CCD. Despite the lower-cost CCD, image quality is not compromised; in fact, in the Pop Photo Lab it performed nearly on par with the D80. The D40x has the exact same controls, menus, chassis, autofocus, metering, etc. as the D40. The only differences between the two cameras are the 10-megapixel sensor, addition of ISO 100, a jump in framing rate and a drop in flash-sync speed. So the D40x has all the strengths of the D40 -- but with the strengths come most of its weaknesses, as well.
