Nikon's most affordable consumer digital SLR, the D50 provides an advanced set of features for its class in a compact, lightweight body. We found the D50's image quality excellent from ISO 200 to ISO 1600. Visual noise ranges from extremely low up to ISO 400, to very low at ISO 800 and low at ISO 1600. Its autofocus was the best in its sub-$1,000 class when we tested it for the September 2005 issue, working even at light levels as low as EV -1. In addition to standard manual and automatic exposure modes, the D50 offers a modest selection of programmed automatic scene modes. Among this camera's notable features are predictive focus tracking, a 2.5 percent spot meter, auto exposure and white balance bracketing, flash sync up to 1/500 second, and support for Nikon's i-TTL external flash system. While most digital SLRs can store images simultaneously in RAW and JPEG format, this option on the D50 limits JPEGs to a Basic size at full resolution but higher, 1:16 compression.
