Even lighter and more compact than the discontinued Pentax ist DS, this consumer digital SLR also offers a slightly less advanced set of features to amateur photographers. Although it uses a pentamirror instead of the more expensive pentaprism in the ist DS, the DL's viewfinder is brighter and offers the same high magnification and accuracy. Its autofocus system is simpler than the DS's, but all three of its focusing points are cross-type sensors that lock onto subjects quickly. We found the ist DL's image quality very high. Visual noise ranges from very low at ISO 200 to low at ISO 400-800, moderately low at ISO 1600, and moderate at ISO 3200. Its autofocus can function in light levels as low as EV 0, although it takes about 2.35 seconds. In addition to standard manual and automatic exposure modes, the ist DL offers a modest selection of programmed automatic scene modes and a setting that automatically selects an appropriate scene mode. Among this camera's notable features are depth-of-field previewing, continuous autofocus, spot metering, a bulb mode, an auto ISO mode, on-camera help features, 2.8 fps continuous shooting, and 18 custom functions.
