08 southcarolina-thumbThere may be no better place in America to take in and capture the stunning colors of autumn than the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is here, in the Upstate of South Carolina, that we will celebrate nature’s most photogenic season.

We’ll be based in a place that is clearly one of the country’s best- kept secrets – the city of Greenville, South Carolina. With its historic downtown, wonderful restaurants, scenic city waterfalls and one-of-a-kind Falls Park Liberty Bridge, there will be plenty to see and do while we’re in town. And best of all, Greenville is just a short distance away from some of the Upstate’s outstanding natural features.

With Nikon professional photographers Tom Bol and John Reddy at your side, discover the natural beauty that offers itself up at every turn.  Eight beautiful state parks, each with their own unique personality, are within a short drive of downtown Greenville, and each day the workshop will offer new visual opportunities for you explore.

From the iconic Table Rock State Park with its massive granite outcropping atop the Blue Ridge Escarpment to Caesars Head State Park – a striking outcropping of rock nearly 3,300 feet above sea level, participants will the have the opportunity to experience and photograph some of the most remarkable landscapes and vistas in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Botanical Gardens offers 295 acres of woodlands, streams, ponds, nature and walking trails, award-winning niche gardens and a peaceful waterfall.  Just to the west is the scenic town of Walhalla, with the famous pre-Civil War engineering feat known as Stumphouse Tunnel—a 1,617-foot- long corridor that was originally intended to help link Knoxville to Charleston by rail, but was never completed. Just down the path from the tunnel is the enchanting Issaqueena Falls offering a picturesque 100 foot drop. Creating a symphony of rock and water, these breathtaking falls also carry a legend of the beautiful Indian maiden for whom the falls are named.

Other highlights of the area include covered bridges, crystalline mountain lakes and streams, and a number of accessible waterfalls.  There are several historically significant sites such as Kings Mountain National Military Park, Cowpens National Battleground and Walnut Grove Plantation that offer glimpse into the region’s past.

Each evening, after a full day of exploration and shooting, we’ll return to Greenville to review your images, learn tips from the pros, enjoy excellent dining and the slow pace of a charming South Carolina city in the company of the new friends that we will make on this adventure.  Join us and share in a wonderful itinerary highlighting Upstate South Carolina’s finest scenery at a perfectly beautiful time of year. Don’t miss it!

Note From Mentor

Hello trekkers!

South Carolina will be a perfect location for honing photography skills, get ready to learn a lot! This part of the country is famous for an infusion of fall color, and our timing should be perfect to photograph this stunning landscape. We also will be photographing models in revolutionary dress, so we will teach portrait techniques and using off camera flash. Bring a tripod if you have one for sunset shooting, and a polarizer filter will help saturate the fall colors. One of the best things you can do before this workshop is learn as many of the functions as you can on your camera so we can focus on developing your photography skills. This workshop offers a wide diversity of shooting, a real bonus for learning a variety of new photography skills. Please feel free to email any equipment questions that come up.

I'll see you in Greenville!
